My Ready to Wear Fast- WHY??

I have always wanted to blog about my experience as an amateur seamstress.  I have been actively sewing for the past 5 years, but have never really thought that I would write about my trials and tribulations.  I have followed a number of crafting and sewing bloggers over the past few years, wondering is my life interesting enough that I could blog? At the end of all the contemplation, I decided to take the plunge and begin my own blog; a blog that will act, for me, as an archive of my sewing and crafting adventure starting in 2014.

As a catalyst for this blog, I have committed myself to an #RTW fast for the next year.  For ONE full year, I will no longer permit myself to purchasing any Ready To Wear items.  That is, I will no longer be purchasing, tops, coats, pants, sweater, etc.  I am however allowed to purchase underpinnings (bras, panties, socks) and shoes.  The reason why I have decided to do that is to test the limits of my sewing abilities but also to make a conscious effort to think about what I am spending.  I am sure that some of you can relate when you walk into a store, you see something that you love, you try it on and then you buy it.  When you arrive at home, you discover that it’s not exactly what you wanted, or that you have something very similar, or quite frankly, you realize that you could’ve made it better.    I have also had the experience of purchasing something, wear it once and then have the darn thing fall apart on me.  What a waste of money!

The other reason is that as a petite woman, with large breast AND standing only 4’10” I find it very hard to get professional-looking clothing that fit right.  Never mind to alter the garments; the cost to alter the item cost equal to or more than the garment itself.  Sewing became a necessity for me but has made me appreciate the work that goes into creating a garment, the time, care that is needed to make it just right.
